His primary objective was to keep the fire going so that they could be rescued. His secondary objective was to build shelters, harvest food, etc so that they could survive until the ships got there. His tertiary objective was to keep the fire going. Ralph gets so enraged at Jack because someone was supposed to have been reservation the fire going so that the ship would see them, but Jack recruited the boys to his hunting party, so the fire went out and ship passed by without seeing it.
